Today I showed up to use my voice for our planet, our oceans, for future generations, for wildlife, and for myself, because we are in a climate emergency whose ramifications in this lifetime, let alone future lifetimes, scare the crap out of me.
I posted up next to a group of passionate teens who were chanting “Save our Earth!” 🌎
As cars drove by and honked in encouragement, as people of all ages joined in and chanted together, it brought up a lot of unexpected emotion in me, and all of a sudden I had tears in my eyes, and my voice cracked.
I struggle with a lot of anxiety, and feelings of helplessness, around our environmental situation.
I often feel like the amount and types of changes that need to happen, on a worldwide scale, to reverse our climate situation, are somewhat unfathomable, and also potentially politically impossible. 🤯
But today, communities around the world put aside their differences to come together and demand change. As I stood amongst one of these communities, I felt a different emotion: Hope.
Passion, too.
Inspiration.
Motivation.
Today reminded me that every voice has its own power, and when you put all of those powerful and passionate voices together, they get a lot louder.
In our divided world, it’s easy to forget how much stronger we are together.
I’m aware that showing up at a protest means very little, if you go home and make the same choices you made before.
That’s not my plan.
Talking about it isn’t enough.
We have to act.
I have to act.
I already avoid single-use plastics as much as possible, but that’s not enough.
Making so many lifestyle changes can feel overwhelming, but one of my takeaways from today’s inspiring speakers, was to start by picking 1 or 2 improvements to actively focus on, rather than trying to change everything at the same time.
Mine right now are composting and moving more quickly toward a plant-based lifestyle.
Naysayers will say little changes aren’t enough, but I want to remind you, and myself, that every positive change matters.
Make enough of them, and they start to add up into some big changes.
I’ll leave you with this: if you think you’re too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito. 💥
