There’s no google maps for the path of my destiny, and sometimes I wish there was.
When I feel lost in life, it can make me feel so helpless, as if I have no idea where I’m going, let alone any idea of how to get there.
But yesterday, I spent the day getting lost on purpose, and it was beautiful.
We said goodbye to google maps, turned off our phones, and traveled down narrow forest roads we had never driven before, not knowing where they led, but trusting it would be the kind of journey that would teach us something or show us something incredible.
In the end, it accomplished both.
Along the way, we came across unexpected obstacles, like downed trees that caused us to do some pretty gnarly backup maneuvers and off-roading, and unexpected moments of magic, like a silent grove of the most majestic rainbow eucalyptus trees I’ve ever seen.
After it all, we found our way again.
I usually associate feeling lost with feeling helpless or fearful, even frustrated, but this time it felt like an exciting adventure.
That’s because this time, I chose to get lost.
Perspective and ownership of our experiences are the keys to making a sad rainy day feel like a chance to dance ecstatically in the rain.
They’re the keys to making life’s chaos feel like an exciting adventure.
When things get hard, you can ask “Why is this happening to me?” or you can instead ask “What is this teaching me?”
Life can feel like it’s happening to you, or it can feel like it’s happening for you.
But either way, it’s happening.
When you shift your perspective on this, even life’s hardship can happen for you, rather than to you.
This is one way to take your power back, and feel less helpless in the face of life’s chaos.
The next time you feel metaphorically lost, I dare you to go out and get lost on purpose.
Remind yourself that life is really just a choose your own adventure book, and you have everything it takes, right now, inside of you, to find your way. 💗
